NOVICE + OPEN STATUS EXPLAINED

The following information pertains to the Ridden Section of the Standardbred Show Ring only.  If you are competing in other RAS Sections (eg. Park Hack, Hack, Riding Horse etc) you will need to refer to the RAS website for further information.

When a Standardbred begins it's show career under saddle it holds the status of "Novice".  All Novice horses are required to be shown in a single bridle with snaffle bit.  All competitors (Inhand and Ridden) are required to carry a Showing Passport at ALL shows. The NZSBA Showing Passport has provision to record all Ridden wins (with you and previous owners) in the following sections;
  • Conformation
  • Paced and/or Mannered

CONFORMATION WINS
When a horse has received 6 conformation wins under "Novice" status, the horse then becomes "Open" and can no longer compete in "Novice" classes.

Conformation wins are defined as any of the following;
  • Novice
  • Open
  • Lady's Standardbred
  • Gentleman's Standardbred

PACED AND/OR MANNERED WINS
When a horse has received 6 wins under "Novice" status, the horse then becomes  "Open" and can no longer compete in the "Novice Paced and/or Mannered" classes.

Paced and/or Mannered wins are defined as any of the following;
  • Novice Paced and/or Mannered
  • Open Paced and/or Mannered

IMPORTANT!
  • If your horse holds "Open" status in both of the above categories you are still required to carry your Showing Passport at all times. NO Exceptions.
  • It is important that you ensure that the steward has your NZSBA Showing Passport at every RAS show to record wins - this is your responsibility as a competitor.
  • If your horse holds "Open" status, this will be reflected on your NZSBA Showing Passport and you must ALWAYS carry your NZSBA Showing Passport.
  • If you are entering a show that stipulates height classes you must carry a RAS Height Certificate.  Wins are to be recorded on your NZSBZ Showing Passport NOT on the RAS Height Certificate.
  • If you are competing in RAS sections ie - Hack, Park hack, Riding horse etc, your wins will be recorded on your RAS Height Certificate, NOT your NZSBA Showing Passport. These are two separate documents, used for two separate showing sections and do not cross over.
  • Shows will refuse a competitor entry to a class if a NZSBA Showing Passport is not presented and/or carried.
